Hello

I am planning a 6 months stay at a university in England or Ireland and was thinking about Dublin. Just want to know where the canoepolo clubs (and which level they play at) are located in Ireland and if there are any competitions from september to january 2007?

In Dublin and surrounding areas there are quite a few clubs but the following concentrate on canoepolo.

Kilcock (20 miles West of Dublin) is one of two clubs in Ireland committed to canoe polo. They have over 100 members and cater for all levels of canoepolo. They enter summer competitions and sometimes enter their teams into the Dublin and Munster leagues. Kilcock have players in the men and U21 squads. Details of the club can be found on www.kilcockcanoepoloclub.com (http://www.kilcockcanoepoloclub.com).

WWKC (based in Dublin) is a club dedicated to all aspects of canoeing and has players playing in 21 teams currently. WWKC also have the local university club (DCU) affiliated with us and they use the premises for training. WWKC enter domestic and international competitions. WWKC also have teams in the Dublin and Munster leagues in the Autumn and Spring. (www.wwkc.net (http://www.wwkc.net))

Voyagers (roofrack club) have a team playing polo.

DCU (University club) have 6 teams in the dublin league. They would be the most dedicated of the University teams. http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~canoe/

UCD (University club) hhave also one team playing.
http://www.ucdcanoeclub.com/

DIT (University club) have also had players playing polo.

In the September to January season there is a league that runs in Dublin played over 16 weeks. The league has 5 divisions of 7/6 teams each. Teams are made up of players of similar level. Teams are always looking for players. Their website is www.dublincanoepolo.ie (http://www.dublincanoepolo.ie).

Hope this helps.

Hi Atbarber

very good description - thanks.

So is Kilcock is more or less the total national squad or are there players from Dublin as well? Do players in Dublin go to Kilcock for training during the week or does Dublin have a team which can compete with Kilcock?

Sorry if I did not clarify this.

Last years Irish Mens Squad comes from a mixture of WWKC, Kilcock, North Kildare Canoe Club, The U21 squad came from a mixture of the same. The Womens Squad is more mixed and come from DCU, WWKC, Limerick, Belfast, Dun Loaghiare Sea Scouts, and ithers. There were one or two players from other clubs in the other squads as well.

Yip, the rest of us must be showing a lack of interest in the sport. If the only real centre of polo is in the pale.

Ah Jayus lad, we all know the boyo's and lassies in cork and other parts of this Emerald Isle play polo, It just that the dub's been doing it longer. And the poor wee fella did say he was thinking of studying in hte "Big Smoke".

Now as Old Mr Brennan used to say, shut up and bake the bread ya little b*****

The lad was asking after Dublin. It would be good to see some Cork, Limerick and Galway folks in the teams again. Cork had several squad members in years gone by, as had Ballina.

Keep up the good work down there.

My point being that competitive polo is more or less confined to the pale. This is a compilment to the effort but also shows the need for development outside.
And mister Drew you auld bollix, the dub's have not been doing it longer. :D

BTW: no need to hide who it is, just use your own profile.

Well Niall, just to correct you on your facts, the first Canoe Polo Match in Ireland was held by members of WWKC, two teams, Wizards and Pastmasters in, go on guess, answers on the back of a postcard please....yes that's right Dublin. For a bonus point, what was the score of the first game????

Niall, I asked Ronnie to do a voice over for the 2 posts, cost a fortune, rip off old git.....:wavey:

I excluded any extra history as Adrian has covered this is a previous post on the History of canoe polo in Ireland and also because it makes me feel extremely old.:(

First polo match in Dublin was about '84 or '85. They started to play polo in Cork in '87 I think.
