Hi,
Does anybody know where this competition is taking place in Limerick? Will it be in the UL pool or at an outdoor location.

As it's part of RiverFest on the May Bank Hol weekend, wouldn't it be nice to host it outdoors?

I'd like to suggest the area of water enclosed by Poor Mans Kilkee and Wellesley Pier ( i.e between Limerick Boat Club and Pier One).

What do people think? It would be a very public location, right in the city centre and should attract many spectators and isn't too far from curragower where the other river activities take place.

I'm availalbe to help out and I'm sure we can supply a few more volunteers from Limerick Canoe Club too......just let us know....

Indoor pool would be much nicer/warmer with showers right beside you etc,etc

But if the competition was able to be held outdoors it would be much cheaper
allow for bigger entries as you wouldn't be constrained by the pool booking times

Just my :twocents:

Limerick would get more entries if they ran two pitches outdoors. This would be less restrictive on playing times.

The National committee would be able to lend you a set of floating goals. (Maybe even two if we get them in time).

But there will be no division 1 teams...Since most of the division 1 players and squad players will be at the international competition in Chareloi

Pity Div 1 teams won't be around but I think the date for polo was picked to coincide with the annual RiverFest. Its a great weekend with lots of other paddling events and water sports events as well as World BBQ, BMX etc...

As regards location, it would be a pity to have to restrict number of team entries as happened at the Munser League this year. Our team from Limerick Canoe Club didn't get a spot and while I understand the limitations of the pool etc.....there is certainly an opportunity here to have the competition open to everybody by using an outdoor venue (preferably city centre as suggested above)............and the more the merrier for the party afterwards:)

Who is organinsing this competition, is it ULKC?

While i think the Pool in UL is probably the best venue in the country..the pure cost and limit on team numbers makes its restrictive. I think that an outdoor tournament would be much better for all involved!

I will be organising the event in Limerick in May by the looks of it. I have already approached the organisers of Riverfest but they don't seem to be very interested in incorporating polo into the schedule of events after what happened last year.
I wasn't involved but I understand that a considerable prize fund was offered by the sponsors of riverfest to host a polo competition/demonstration but this was not even acknowledged by whoever was approached. I'm not mentioning names simply because I wasn't involved and don't know the full story.
The fallout is that it will be hard to get the riverfest team involved this year.
I'm working on it.
On a different note, I am looking forward to seeing all the Munster League teams on Feb 3 for the next night of the competition. Sorry to all those that didn't get a place.

How typical,

Well I remember last year after the Docklands someone from the riverfest organisers open a topic why we staged two polo competitions at a same weekend, and he gives his 2cents not in a gentleman way.

Jimmy you’re good guy and you seams to carry lots of on your shoulders, on hint you should find him and talk to him.

Talk to you later

Muppets,Cyclones, kamakazi, mighty ducks, kilcock, sandycows........are these all on the Mens div1 team for charlroi????

Irish div 1 polo is more than just the 24 ppl who play on senior and U21 squads, sure they help raise the level and make it more competitive.

but please dont disregard all these other teams and the efforts they put into training to stay at div 1 standard

excuse the narky-ness its a sunday and i am working :(

I think you will find the post you refer to here...it would appear your memory is not as good as you think Nik.

http://www.canoepolo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8147

From this i think you 'll find
A) The post was not started by someone involved with riverfest.
B) The topic starter was infact a lady so it would not be made in an unlady like way!
C) The information was supplied by a member of riverfest to clarify and address the comments in the post -

not in a gentleman way really depends on your point of view I guess but you really should check your information before you post or it may cause offence

Lets just focus on this years competition:)

Even if riverfest aren't sponsoring prizes, I'm sure the polo comp will be fantiastic!! And as the riverfest promoters (eightball promotions) are employed by Limerick City Council, I'd imagine the polo event can be advertised as part of the festival.

Jimmy if you need any help from Limerick canoe club, please get in touch...

3 or 4 of the muppets team will also be in charelori, and a player or two from Sandycows mighty ducks also do not have a div 1 team any more..So thats cyclones and kamakazie! and maybe 1/2 muppets

Having been involved in the running of both the Limerick Polo Comp and the Munster Polo League for the last 3 years, I just want to clarify a couple of things.

1)The limerick polo comp has never, refuesed an entry into the competition. All teams have always been alowed to play, once they have contacted one of the organisers in advance.

2)Last year it was disscussed prior to the competition of the possibility of running the comp in line with Riverfest. This did not happen due to the docklands competition being organised at the time so the limerick comp was played the following week as had been scheduled earlier on in the year. No one in limerick ever complained about this fact.

3)The MPL is restricted in numbers, due to the confins of the pool. And unfourtunatly we were unable to accomadate all the teams in this years competition, the reasons for this are obvious, just to note the teams that were accomadated in the competition all have a history with the competition.

Finally i would like to say, that if people have issues/queries about any of the competitions being run in Limerick, we would appreciate it if you would contact us directly about these issues as opposed to posting them on the board, its not as if we are hard to get in contact with.

What I was wondering is:

"Now that there is one year to plan ahead, is there any possibility of coordinating things so that both events do not clash??"

Homer/Jimmy

Thanks for all the organising of the event over the years and people do appreciate it even though they do not show it some times.

Last year the date had been set for Docklands earlier in the year well before we were approached by the Limerick committee to see if we could move docklands. It was looked into but the Docklands organiser (Nikolay) had already done a lot of groundwork for that date and could not change. He moved the date this year to facilitate Limerick.

The competitions organiser was to get back to Limerick and let them know. I cannot say whether this happened or not but either way the Riverfest people did not get the word.

The committee is made up of volunteers who work hard to develop our sport and to try and move it forward. We have increased the number of potential competitions this year and introduced several junior tournaments.

If the Riverfest organisers want to contact me directly about last year and moving this year forward then I am open always open to a call. If they want to meet I will make myself avialable to meet.

Good luck with the tournament
