Didnt see any games being in the wrong hemisphere and all but My :twocents: is that it would be hard to find a better Female polo player than #1 Tania in the NZ team
finishing with a 2nd place must mean that she must be up there, i played against her in our mens national leauge for their warm up and she was tough - the rest of the team you could easily out muscle but not her.
as for the mens and U21 no idea sorry
knowledge?

In my opinion:
MEN: JD, #1 Holland
LADIES: Lena #2 Germany
U21: Martin Lelievre #5 France - one of the greatest canoeist I've never seen in canoe polo
Clearly none of you have ever seen Jimmy Love play or you would know who the best player is!

Women's would have to be Lena or Super Gin, they are by far above the rest of the women at the moment.
Men's, there really are a lot of great players up there. The French No 5 has boat control that you would not believe.

Wanted to edit the post above, but couldn't see how.
What I think makes a great player tho is one that can lift a team, by example, when the team is down and needs to get back in to the game. To do this the player must have exceptional skills, fitness and above all temprament. A cool head that can focus a team when the going gets tough. Have a look at teams that can come back from being a few goals down nearing the end of the game and you will find the truely great players.

both the captains of the finals, italy and france were awesome guiding their teams to the finals. it was a great match that i bet lifted all the supporters off their seats. al the way to the penalty shoot out. thanks for the great games guys. it was worth the airfare money spent. haha.

If you want to talk about great team players you have to mention Philippe of the french mens team. great leader and what a goal in the final. Awesome!

I think the bestest player in the world was Paul KERR.He never really made it onto the big stage but he could do everything, pass, catch and shoot with both hands and was also a great swimmer.
How do you say in English, cheers.

Yes recognition at last! Not of my skills, but of my swim! Amazingly enough I did my first canoe marathon today and swam at that too! Wierd though, I can't remember ever going to Belize...

When are you going to be the best player in the world Anton - you were well on your way when I was in Australia in 1999?
The Bug
27-08-2006, 08:44 PM
Mr KERR is one of a selected few, great enough who have had the honour of wearing a GB bouyancy aid whilst playing polo and also be in consideration for the GB swimming team at the same time. Can you help me out with the others i can't quite put my finger on there names as i struggle to get information out here? They to must be in contention for the best player as they have to multi task there skills,in and out of the boat whilst still in or on the water.
Cheers.:wavey:

Haha. Cheers Paul.
Something that I will be striving to become for years to come I think. Tho a few retirements might make that easier :)
Anyhow, I'd rather be a member of the best team in the world than just the best player in the world, just as long that I am the best that I can be.
Anton.

Hi Anton if your best is not good enough but you are a world champion in that team would you not feel guilty picking up a medal.
Anton Holmes
30-08-2006, 10:55 PM
You've misunderstood what I wrote there.
You don't have to be the best in the world to win the world championship, as an individual, you have to be the best team in the world, which to me is more important than indivual recognition.
I would rather win the worlds than be recognised as the best in the world and not have a gold medal around my neck.
I don't think that I'm the only person that would think that way either.

Nope, can't work it out. I mean, who needs to keep their identity secret in the world of canoe polo? It's not really like the mafia. ARe you going to start stalking me yelling SWIMMERRRR KERRRRR at me down the street before the police arrest you and take you in your urine drenched trousers to a hostel for the night which you will abscond from because they threaten to confiscate your supply of smack and spend the night drunk in a bus shelter screaming abuse at passing pigeons before you succomb to hypothermia? Why Belize? Is it a clue? Play on the word Bellies? Are you a very fat person? Why the Bug - did you paddle the notoriously ripped off revenge, or are you just infected with something?
Anyway good luck to you, Belize needs canoe polo and it sound like you'e the man to bring it to them!

When considering the best player in the world one has to address every issue not just what one sees on the pitch.Theres a lot more that goes into being a top player than just a couple of good performances and chomping on a piece of chewing gum trying to look cool for the crowd.
Back home i feel i am a great player and the village i am from seem to think so to,but i am just a small fish in a big pond and there are many small fish around it appears to me.
I would urge Anton to keep training hard and one day your dreams may come true,i believe mine will as i train as hard as i can when the harvest season has finished.
As for Mr KERR he truly has a good imagination about myself,i am just another polo fan with dreams and ambition and i usually leave urinating on myself until i'm in my boat when it's cold.:wavey:

I play in the same team as the bug and we can't work out what this chewing gum is? Surely there is a chance of choking at big matches when you put your all into it.

The talk in the village is about this number 5 France and boat control, yes thats important but what about the aspects of polo ie passing shooting,5 out ,blocking etc surely we have to look at this,or is he the best player because he does great dips and spins,i ask you, please????
Think about what you write and why before you shout out random names that you have heard about on the grape vine. The complete player is what we are talking about.
That doesn't mean they also have to play in the top teams either, take for instance Brad from Canada, without his influence where would they be,he's been a great player for them for many years.
Listen to the bug,you might learn something,i might not attend the championships but i study the videos, they tell a different story.
As they say in my country,it takes more than one Bee to make a hive, think about it!

It's interesting that you think that I have just shouted out this name randomly from things that I have heard and not from 1. Actually being there, and 2. from having played against these very players and teams, among others, on several occasions.
Besides that, as I re-read my original post, you will see that I never actually stated that he is the best player in the world, just put it out there that there are many great players in the mens division, and that his boat control was above the normal at international level.
The Chewing gum reference is to Alan Vessey, who's name has been put forward in the discussions of who is the best player in the world for as long as I have heard best players being talked about.

Anton i hear you, although i have not played at top level as yet but am still striving to do so and you have,i am still unsure about your choice as best player?I am at a loss as to where people get there opinions from?Do they listen to the general tittle tattle at the venues or do they really understand what goes on ,I am unsure as i don't compete at the top level?
As for the chewing gum remark,it was not aimed at anyone in particular but if thats what will make me a better player, chewing gum as the top players do,Im off to order some on e bay if you think it will help.I would like to know how many players in the French team chew during games?Maybe it is something we both should consider for improving our game?
Thanks for the advice:thumbdown

Back to the point of the best player in the world and a lot of my mate the bugs points.
I looked at players who have been at more than 4 worlds. Surely these are some of the best players in the world as they must of played at a high level to keep up there consistancey. These are not flash in the pan stars which there seem to be now. They must of had all round ability. Now reading other comments as soon as someone scores a good goal or paddles fast everyone thinks they are the next best thing?
I think looking at photos( which are not clear as we have to look at them through a projector) me and the bug will focus our game on the old school punters.
Hopefully we will all meet one day at a championship

Here here i applaud the wasp, one hit wonders don't seem to stay around, look what happened to the Billy Ray Cirus?
Can Anton also explain the poor, preperation thing please and who did he aim that at,i am not familiar with that term or words?

Did he play polo as well? Did he ever swim? One hit wonders are ok by me - If you've reached the standard then prove yourself and:thumbdown move on to something else - isn't it boring plugging away at the same damn thing all the time like a hamster in a wheel?

I have to agree with Anton on a couple of his points:
1. Lena and Super Gin are definately head & shoulders above the rest at the moment.
2. A great player is one who can lift a team, especially when the going gets tough - I would say Lena excels at pulling a team together, and Ginny is great at pulling back from being down.

off topic a bit but i rekon the bug and the wasp are the same person. I also have an inkling they're from GB.
btw, mad goal in the u21 mens final from france. the fast break goal where the guy roll's in and passes backwards to the guy behind him then there's the one on one under goals. I just watched it! prime!
being the best team in the world is the best bet in my opinion, nevermind the best player.. you could be the best player in the world and never win a world championship if the rest of the team is slightly below the benchmark.
