Dear Canada Polo Players,
Please find attached the dates that I propose for Canada Canoe Polo up until the end of the 2004 World Canoe Polo Championships. The file is in Excel97 or you can go to the Wapiti Whitewater Kayakers Website http://www.telusplanet.net/public/rak_acl/wwwpaddlers.html
Firstly I recognized that there is some polo fatigue out there, however as organizers we need to put the plans in place to put Canada Polo into motion for the next two years.
Specifically, we need to provide advanced notice to allow players to plan training, work and live life around these events. Also pool bookings must be secured in advance. The plan must strike a balance between having too few and too many events scheduled, and the plan must key into the dates for major events.
Currently those major events are the 2003 & 2004 Canadian Championships, the 2003 Continental Cup and the 2004 worlds. Before the 2003 Continental Cup and the 2004 Worlds I have placed in the schedule selection camps, then mandatory camps for the selected teams in the same manner that we have in the past.
Recognizing that all Canadian Polo players cannot being flying in and out of Edmonton all of the time there is a need for each polo active area, to have camps with their own polo players. I have scheduled these camps for each province that is currently active in polo. Really since we cannot provide any organizational (or financial support at this time) all we can do is try and have those locations on the plan. and give them encouragement. In the long term it would be nice to be able to get Canadian coaches and equipment into these locations.
OK that is my rationale, now on with the plan:
On the schedule you will note the following things:
1. I have listed all polo tournaments that I know of. These are club events but since we need to promote "competition", people need to know about all polo events across Canada so that if they choose to, they can drop in and play.
2. Depending on response and pool availability there may be a xmas camp in Edmonton 2002. Right now 11 people have confirmed that they would attend. Dale is looking in to Kinsman pool time.
3. The 2003 Canadian Canoe Polo Championships date is finalized and in BC.
4. As mentioned where there are gaps in the schedule, regional training camps have been listed for encouragement to each area to organize. These camps really can be as simple as all the polo players in one area finding some free water and getting together to play with at least one person to guide them in the ways of polo. It need not be expensive or a elaborate event.
5. Prior to the departure of players to Europe in Aug 2003 there needs to be a Continetal Cup team selection. I have tentatively picked the date of July 26,27,2003
6. August of 2003 has been left empty since many people have indicated that they wish to go to Europe in the summer to participate in some polo tournaments.
7. A 2003 Xmas camp in Edmonton is planned. This should be a big camp with a international guest coach. Also on this date the planning for the 2004 worlds needs to start and a team manager needs to be in place.
8. I have placed in the 2004 Nationals in Edmonton. I think that it is obvious that until polo is across Canada, Edmonton will be the location for nationals at least every second year. In other worlds 2005 should be in some location other than Edmonton. Any place with an active polo community would do.
9. At this point the schedule ramps up and follows the same timing as the 2002 worlds, with selection camps and mandatory camps being help on long weekends up until the teams leave.
Looking forward to comments and suggestions.
