The U21s got a silver medal. We were definitely better than Argentina, but not nearly as good as Brazil. We have a lot of work to do.

The Brazilian women were pretty good. They were very disappointed that the US and Canadian women did not come down so that they could compete in the PanAmericans.

The weather was fantastic. The Brazilian women were stunningly efficient using cloth. It was amazing what they could do with 12 square inches of fabric. ;-)

The Brazilians are the friendliest, huggiest, kissingest people I have ever seen. Instead of a handshake or a howdy, it was a hug and a kiss.

We were able to transport our boats to/from Brazil for $100 each as excess baggage. Our plane tickets were around $1000. The visa and reciprocity fee was $110. The room was $86 with a very nice breakfast. Food was delicious and reasonable. So,for well under $1400 we were able to go thousands of miles and have a ton of fun. We do have stories on getting back, however. I will save those for another time.

Alan and I refereed a lot. We got to referee the finals in the International Tournamdnt. Eric and Jason each got to second ref a single game in the International Tournament that we had in the afternoons.

We only had one serious problem. COPAC (our hemispheric organization) would not allow us to use our own boats in the PanAmericans. We were able to use them in the International Tournament. I did file an official protest to hope to elevate this so that it does not happen again. Many were worried about getting the boats down there. It only cost us $600 total and we could have shared boats with senior men/women if push came to shove. The Brazilian U21s were very unhappy about not being able to use their boats either. I don't know how they get away with not following ICF rules.

David,

Thank you for the great information.
What airlines let you take boats? Did they know that they were kayaks and not surfboards?

What happens now for the U21's qualification for worlds? were they automatically qualified to go to Amsterdam just by showing up at Pan Ams? or did they have to beat Brazil? I think there is confusion. I understand that the senior men have only the wild card selection to hope for now :( .

Hmm...hey Steph, do you ever feel like we are being ignored?! hhahahaha...

Maybe we should line up excessive emails in David's inbox. Just a suggestion.

They had to beat Brasil. They are in the same boat as the men now.

UGh. That sucks. I thought they had it if they went.

Ok, so if they aren't going to talk to us, I am going to start typing on what I have heard, and if there are any discrepencies, they can correct them if they so choose:
I heard that the Brazilian U21's were a hard team, and that our boys had a few sketchy moments.
I also heard that 2 of them spent an extra night in Brazil...part of it in the infirmary at the airport. Eric(?) I beieve had to have 2 bags of liquids pumped into him after almost passing out in the bathroom. Patch and Scott also had a side adventure in Miami...or somewhere in FL for an extra afternoon.

Aside from that, everyone is being pretty closed mouthed about it all.
And thank you, Miss Spellchecker. Now if only I could get you to work on your grammer...
Oh, and thanks, Brad!

The Brasillian U21s were very strong, just like thier senior team. The upside is that I heard next year some of them will be moving up to the senior team.
All the teams had sketchy moments ... US U21s included.
I can confirm that two brothers were still in the Sao Paulo airport 24 hours after they were scheduled to depart ... and one of them wasn't alking much and didn't look too good.
Other than that I don't know too much.
Happy to answer questions though. :-)

You are so missing my joke Miss on the defensive! ugh. I wasn't correcting your spelling, heck if i know how to spell!!! i was merely trying to show a discrete lyrics reference which, if you think back to that infamous road trip in 2002 to Durham, i believe you would find funny. but alas....;)

Yeah Scott didnt go to Brasil that afternoon I was kinda by myself until I realized Brad was on the same flight as me so I felt a lil more comfortable. The Brazilian U21's were much stronger than us because the referees didnt call certain types of obstruction calls which made it much harder for us when they pressed us.
But other than the games brasil was a blast! I'm considering going back for my senior trip!

Patch,

It was fantastic that the USA U21s made it to Brazil and beat the Argentianian U21s. Good job.

But, the Brazilian U21s were stronger than the USA U21s because they were STRONGER than you all. Sure, the refs couldn't catch all the obstructing. The Senior Brazilian team was doing the same to the USA Senior team when they pressed us. This single issue was not the deciding factor in why you lost to their U21s nor why we lost to the Senior team. In both cases, they were the stronger team and deserved to win.

This will hopefully serve as an inspiration to all of you U21s of where the bar is and what your goal of improvement should be. You've all got at least another 2 years together as a team, so train hard and give the Brazilian U21s a run for their money in 2007. Hell, train your butts off for the next year and hopefully, with an ICF wild card, you'll meet the Brazilians again in Amsterdam.

O' by all means I understand they were MUCH stronger than us. That was a huge factor in the game and yes they definitely did deserve to win. But the obstruction calls were something we were not use to at all and I believe all the south american countries were. But when it comes to amsterdam and 2007 I think we'll be a little more prepared.

Patch, I'm glad to hear that you recognize that. I thought, from your previous post, that you meant you lost due to the constant obstruction.

...the obstruction calls were something we were not use to at all and I believe all the south american countries were.

Yup, there were quite good at obstructing and avoiding the calls.

But when it comes to amsterdam and 2007 I think we'll be a little more prepared.

Glad to hear it. I hope to see you there.

Alright Patch. What was the best lesson learned down there? The coolest trick that you would LOVE to be able to do? And you have to include at least one story into this. :) I want to start hearing details.

hahaha. There is so much to tell! You'll have to give me sometime to figure out what was my favorite part. I really didnt see many new "tricks" or anything but I did learn that a very strong key to the game is the ability to adapt to you opponent's offense and their defense. I'll tell you more later because I got to get to class.

I did learn how to make a great low screen but only to do it every so often because every time you do it, it gets less and less effective. My paddling technique got alot better from the training camp we went to before we went to brasil. And I think the one thing im goin to work on now is my shot. I think it sux so i'm goin to work on it harder.

I dont think jason was talking much bc he was pissed that his phone calls to home and his girlfriend cost him $75. I was still not feeling all that great and still lacking on sleep, but the next day after a night in my own bed, i was ready to go again. If you want to hear stories, try to find me in person
