As a ref, when would you deem something to be "within arms reach" ?

Would that be best described by:

a.anywhere a player can touch with their hand from their current torso position

b.Anywhere a player can reach, including moving their body back and forth or side to side (or a mixture of both) from it's current position.

c. It depends.

1 meter per arm!

It sounds very long but if you read your ref. manual then it is in there.

You can read the NEW ZEALAND RULES from our homepage

canoepolonz.org.nz (http://www.canoepolonz.org.nz)

New Zealand rules refer to posession as being "within arms reach" no mention is made to an exact measurement as with some international versions of the rules.

What I'm really interested in is how different referees apply the rule. What the bounds of their interpretation is and how they ensure consistency of application.

Obviously there will be differing opinions on how this should be done.

So all you lurkers out there... I've always known there were a few, but was interested to see over 30 views of a msg I posted within the first 24hrs of it being available for viewing.

Come on everyone! I'm sure you have an opinion... even as a player being on the receiving end.

the nz rules and their application are probably going to have a few major changes if even 1/4 of the worlds players who say they want changes act on their words. We need to be sure any changes to our beautiful NZ rules are done in consultation with players at all levels!

get in and have your say...

Troy Lipsham was responsible for the 1999 revision of the NZ rules. He was at the Inter-Regional Champs this year and suggested this was one of the areas that needed to be reviewed. His discussion points are quite intereting, but I'm not sure if he gets on this forum. I have set up a poll on the Northern Website- actually there are a few polls on the site about the rules so if you have an opinion go there and vote! Anyway there's a vote there about how you should judge "arms length".

If you voted about the rules before, I'm afraid you'll have to do it again, because the service that provides the voting polls shifted servers and erased the results.

By the way, one of the voting options mentions from "the base of the cockpit". What that means is, that say someone is leaning back. Well, what if there is a paddle there and they don't lean forward because of the paddle? Are they intimidated?

(This was Troy's example). So, what might be a fair way of interpreting that situation, was to judge arms reach from where the movement is based- which, is where they are sitting in their boat. (But the option on the ballot isn't all that clear).

By the way, if you vote, and you change your mind, contact me, because I think in that situation I might be able to edit the results (but I don't want to try it for no reason).

Anyway, sorry about the votes being removed, but it wasn't my fault

There's only 7 votes on the ICF versus NZ rules ballot, and 5 of the votes say we should go ICF. :wavey:
Well, if everyone says we should.... (Mind u, on one of the ballots Spain was going to win the Worlds, so maybe I'll hold judgement for a wee while longer..)
