Hello,
Anyone home? I am just forum hopping and decided to see if anyone from Singapore is here. If you read this and reply, let me know what polo is like there, please.

I think this forum will be quiet until after the worlds as the guy who asked me to set it up is probably in Europe now and won't be changing from their current forums until he organises it.

Hi all

Canoe polo started out somewhere in 1997 or 98 as far as i can remember here back in Singapore. The games started out small but it grew tremendously better and faster but never could have the same standards as those teams out there in europe.
I believe there is a national team here in Singapore. It is newly formed and training have not started till now. No playing ground for the team to train on.
Hopefully things get done much much faster if only they wanted canoe polo!

babe in the city!

Hey hotbabe and all,

You've got to be old enough to touch on things like history... *sigh*

Canoe Polo in Singapore started way back in the late 80s/early 90s. Sad to say, the sport was rather dormant and played only by students in varsities and polytechnics.

The golden era of CP S'pore started sometime late 2000. Talks of forming a national team got more serious and the national federation stepped in to help with this issue. For the first time, Singapore club teams took part in overseas competitions.

On the local scene, championships are organised on a more regular basis. Participation rates grew and public interest in the event increased. Just this year, we added a novelty event to the championships and it proved to be a hit.

More importantly, the number of teams (and hence players) gearing up towards a more professional look (sponsored uniforms), equipped with better gear (more carbon-kev and other high-end boats) and training under better organised programmes are increasing.

Hopefully, growth of this sport will continue to be in the positive zone. We're currently pushing for the national sports council's inclusion of CP as one of the 'recognised' sports in Spore. All of us here in Singapore are looking foward to that day.

Hi there how is life in singapore is the sun always shining?

:p :silly: :p - Bas (je) - :p :silly: :p

Life in Singapore is not too good recently.

The students are in the midst of their exams. There's a thick and constant haze caused by forest fires in our neighbouring countries. And there have been several bombing incidents indirectly accredited to Al-Qaeda. Bombing incidents are few and far between in this part of the world so people in this region are getting jittery.

How's life in The Netherlands and Ireland?

I went to Amsterdam couple of years back. Man, you guys are cool! I love the place! Though you guys can probably do something about the trash in the streets. But the people are radical, architecture is refreshing and the ambience, esp at night, is to die for...

Haven't been to Ireland but heard loads of polo stuff from Tom Colton and wish I can be there too!!!

Hi Bas and Raymond

Oh God the fires!! When I first moved there in August 97 the fires were more or less at their peak - really awful. For any Irish reading this it was as if you were sourrounded by thousands of households all with turf fires going - the smell is exactly the same! It seems the real problem is that not only are they burning the trees but the ground, which is peat based, is also smouldering and this can go on and on and on and peat (turf) can be real smokey....... Not good at all. In fact it was then that a Garuda flight went down in Indonesian and it seems it was due in part to lack of visibilty due to the smoke!

Otherwise to answer your question Bas Singapore is a great place to live althoug hot and very humid. Surprisingly not all sunshine even without the fires - real tropical weather - you can set your watch by the afternoon showers.

Raymond - I haven't lived in Ireland for quiet some time but I love going back and hope to play some polo there sometime again - (ODO you listening?? Reunite the U boats....)

Ireland is a good spot though - you should try to make it there!

Its a real shame whats going there in S.E. Asian region right now  - hard not to get paranoid in situations like that.

Okay - gotta do some work

U boats

Odo - we have the intent now all we need is a plan and event and 3 or even just 2 more - will be meeting Ferg and Willy in Paris in a few weeks and will mention it...

Anyway this is not for the Singaporean forum - sorry guys (non gender usage of the word of course). Although - here's a thought - a Singapore Open would be a nice place for a reunion - once the fires are out of course! :D

More bombings have been reported in the Philippines.

Seems like the haze is not the thing to worry about.

Security at the airport where I work has been heightened. Question is for how long can we keep this vigilance going? Are we to stay paranoid for a few months, let our guard down slightly and then get all jittery when another bomb goes off??

As I'm typing this, I saw another bombing being reported on the news... :thumbdown
