hi dear paddlers

Here in Italy is still very cold and play canoe polo is at the moment just a dream. Apart this,

Which other sports do you practice to improve your canoe polo skills (both winter and summer seasons)? :barbell:

Ow why does Handbal not standing on the list. This is one of best non-canoepolo activities that will increases your canoepolo skills.

I do Gymnastik, but not to improve my canoepolo skills, its just becourse it is fun :-) and i idi it long before i startet at canoepolo, but now canoepolo is my "main" sport! :worship: i just love it :)

(i think that the best way to improve your polo-game is in a canoe with a ball)

thats what pools are for, It's kinda expensive and small but at least you can still get in boat.

as for other sports,
I used to do slalom to improve speed and now I just go play boating on the rivers. I've also heard that biathalon is some how supposed to be a good cross over sport.

Besides training for the new poloseason (fitness e.g.) I play Beachvolleyball, just to get a sense of summer (in wintertime)

Sounds stupid, but if you can't get out on the water, then just standing in a space practicing your paddling technique can help. Makes good tecnique second nature, which hopefully you keep in a game situation. Tones the muscles a bit but for obvious reasons doesn't build up strength. If you can get on a kayak ergometer this can be the best bad weather training. Also Ice breaking is fun, but chilly!

Another good sport to compliment your canoe polo is basketball.
The hand to ball coordination is a great help with your game. If you are playing a long hard game of polo the fitness side of basketball helps greatly. I also mountain bike and play golf. As well as having a physical job in construction. :twocents:

I play Badminton three nights a week as it is a fast action game which keeps you fit, trim and its fast reaction time is ideal for your reflexes.
The leg work in the running around the courts compensates the upper body exercise you get from playing polo.

when i was a kid and growing up in India(kerala), one of my fav past time was taking rocks and throwing at a particular coconut amongst a bunch of them on top of the coconut tree till it dropped. i think this is like one of the best ways to improve your shooting. haha..

I think a sport to play to improve shooting would be WATERPOLO.
i have this guy in my club team ( National University of Singapore)who used to be from waterpolo and his shooting is like ridiculously good.

A general trend i observe is that the better players in the squad have a played a wide variety of TEAM SPORTS. I would think playing team sports like soccer, basketball, handball, hockey etc will give you an EDGE in that you are able to understand game plays much better. They also tend to able to understand and execute concepts like "off the ball running" and shielding without even being aware of it.
I would think that instead of spending more and more time kayaking or passing the canoepolo ball, it would be good to play other TEAM sports... cos those are the one's that would give you an edge in gameplay and eventually allow you the opportunity to take the shot that you have been training so hard for.

since i picked up canoepolo..personally seem to have less time for other sports.. but ocassionally i do play badminton, basketball and soccer....and errmm..i have given up on the coconut shooting practice.

I train mostly canoeslalom its the main sport for me nowdays. Polo comes a bit aside for me beacuse there isnt any poloteam here in Nyköping were i study on the national canoe highschool.
But im trying to start it up beacuse theres already a big Flatwater club here.

I Also do some running to train Aerob and anareob and gym to build up the muscles. I also play a little floorball do some wrestling and uses a medecine ball(dont know what its called i english. but its just a big ball that weights around 3 Kg´s) This i do togheter with teh racing paddler Henrik Nilsson who is one of our coaches here at the highschool. Its pretty much strength training.

But Mainly I just paddle a lot. And i have odered an polo ball so i can practice some shooting and passes.

I used to play soccer for 7 years until my friend asked me to come around to his club. I didnt like it in the beginning when i had to swim more often than I was in the boat :D

I started playing handball this winter. Took me some time until I learned not to throw the ball into the air but it is working now and I do score some goals :) It is also a great sport as it is only for the winter months when we cant paddle anyway.

I play a bit of squash occasionally. get the same feeling from that as I do when I try to sprint at the beginning of a game!

I cross country ski, mountain bike and just recently started ROCK CLIMBING!! Everyone should do this. Great for flexibility and strength. Outside on rock in the summer and inside on the wall in the winter.

Man, we are a diverse group! But one question, and I know I am going to sound dumb to the rest of the world...What is Handball?

I have been in the water my whole life, participating with swim teams. I play soccer, vollyball, and do some kick boxing on the side as an aerobic activity. I have been in a marathon boat once, and swam for that effort. :) After being in a polo boat for so long, it is hard to adjust to sitting like a lady in one of those! I started kayaking with polo, and have found that it encourages some bad habits. Oops.

^^^ that was rather...um...open.

anyways, i run cross country a lot, have a 14 year gymnastics background (which i still attempt everynow and then), lift weights, and kayak lots while it's warm. i think also that i laugh enough to count that as an ab workout! hehe. ya rock climbing is killer! if only it weren't so expensive :thumbdown
