Hey all, this grew out of some discussions at CKC and on another thread...

We need some feedback as to when/where CKC should host a tournament this year.

The spring is fairly full and it is risky to book expensive pool time.

I've proposed moving our spring indoor 3on3 perhaps to the fall, and having a summer tournament in Red Deer in the late spring/early summer.

One idea we'd had from before is to put it on Canada day. This would be AWESOME publicity, with THOUSANDS (litereally) of people come though this relatively small area over the day, and it is very festive with bands playing and food stands and such. The issues here would be: Canada day is a Thursday before a CDN team camp scheduled for Fri-Sun (in Edmonton), and is also only about 2 weeks before the teams leave for Japan.

We could also have the tournament a different time.. say either of the last weekends of June, or move it to after Japan sometime.

Sooo... what do ya'll think? Thanks for any suggestions.

It just occurred to me... Canada day IS a stat, right? people have it off?

Hey Keegan here is an idea.........we would get a lot of people out to see us play on Canada day but where would we park? Remember that the park shuts down the lots to put up food stands. Don't get me wrong it would be a lot of fun to play at the ponds on that day but i think it would take a lot of work to organise. Do you have the time and the ambition to do that? I like the idea of a tournament in June or in the fall aslo, but it would be fun to have a 3 on 3 sometime this spring as well.

Just some thoughts.

That is something I had thought about. In fact, getting approval may be a bit tricky for Canada day just because they are already dealing with sooo many people down there, that they may not want to have anything more happening.

come on now pople don't let that stop you.
Lets think about this: they still have an empty parking lot about twenty feet behind the one they use for food stands, we'd probably start in the morning so the prking lot would be empty, and if we use the same spot we did last time we'd be at the other side of the ponds as the main venue and we'd be out of the way if we stayed on that little island thing. theres no way they can say no.
-at least not if you let me do the talk'n :matrix:

Yea i'd have to agree with tyler and say you probably could find a way, and u don't need to it alone i mean there's a bunch of us that could help u organize and set things up, and if they want to see how popular the sport is i've got 3 or 4 news paper aricles and some footage that is upposed to be on cbc or something. So we should be able to get something negotiated!

I was just looking at one of the schedules and realised that maybe this date is little to close to that trainig camp. Personaly I think you guys should think of it as competitive warmup before the camp. :p

come on what does everybody else think, we can't put on a tournament and have nobody show up. ...again :guns:

I agree with Tyler (a scary thing to do) we can't put on another tournament and have nobody show up again especially if that tournament is on Canada day.

It wasn't that bad last time... and the reason no one came is because everyone wussed out because the weather sucked in Edmonton.

yea you would have to make sure you have better publicity, thats really the main reason why there wasn't a large turn out (not b/c of the weather) i found out about it when we were leaving GP after Canadian Nationals, and had no time to prepare to come... but anyways getting back on topic it would be a good warm up tournament, but for sure need publicity well before the date!

It's probably imporntant to know what dates everybody wants before you go advertising for that tournament.
(wow what a coincidence that we have an entire thread devoted to that very idea) :D

We can have one in GP on Canada Day down in the park with all the people watching. No setup, the pitches are there. A bit of a drive though. Tons of fun!

Would it make sense to hold the scheduled training camp (fri-sunday) in GP as well Brad?

Brad
18-02-2004, 06:54 PM
We sure could.
We could have a training camp in the morning and games in the afternoon or the other way around. I am sure it would work fine. Or just the training camp for a couple days and the fun tourney one day.
Definately flexible.

I wouldn't mind driving up either (I sort of have no choice if Tyler wants to go). But what hapened to having a tournament down here? Are we still going to do that?

Brian B (EWP)

I think we should explore both opportunities and hold a poll on it. I could set one up.

mrkeeg
19-02-2004, 11:18 PM
..Or, since we can never have too much polo, we could just hold our tourney the week before.

mrkeeg

OK, so where does this leave us, then?

GP will host a Canada day tourney and the subsequent training camp.

CKC will host...?
I'd like to do a summer tournament at Bower Ponds again.

I know Heather wants to do an indoor 3on3 - and I notice there are no tournaments at all (?) between now and nationals. What interest would there be in keeping ours as we had it tentatively - on April 3 (week before nationals). Maybe Brian could set up a poll for us, or let's just hear some thoughts?

Keegan

HeatherR

Yeah I really like the idea of havng a 3on3 here becaue I am getting tired of playing with the same eight people evey week. I also think it woud be a lot of fun We even have the pool booked already so we wouldn't even have to worry about that. This is however only my opinion on the matter.

Heather

Rich

YES, the 3on3 tourny sounds like alot of fun, and i don't think it will be problem (only being a week before Nationals)

Heather,
If your sick of playing with the same people every week then either bring more people or go somewhere else. And having a three on three tournament for one weekend won't change who you play with on a weekly basis.

My profesional opinion,

I think that while a three on three tournament would be great, its not worth it. Our pool is verry small and the time slot may only be for one day. I think that if we waited a week or two we could possibly have the tournament outside where there is more room allowing for more teams and a longer, better, CHEAPER tournament. If we had it outdoors then we would also have the option of keeping it a 3 on 3 or having full sized teams. (maybe even both)

all though I agree with you in the fact that a 3 on 3 comp would not change the people you play with in the long term, it dose sometimes provide you with just enough of a break to allow a bit of a feeling for the refreshed sense and drive of the game. Also some times when you play with other people you can learn new things, or see what you do have in your weekly group that you don’t get any where else. I would highly recommend changing it up every once in a while to keep you fresh, motivated, and learning. However make sure in the end you know where your true grass roots are, and who your real team is, you still owe them your support. For your comp, I think you are forgetting that perhaps even though the lagoon or lakes may open they are still going to be freezing, and on top of that the weather will still be largely up in the air. You could plan a small 3 on 3 comp, I am sure it would only be people from Edmonton and innisfail (sorry I got no idea how to spell it) anyways, hence keeping it relatively small, which I think would be good. And then plan a larger outdoor one for latter on in the year, maybe one that can be part of a new training camp you could setup to coincide. I imagine if you did do this with the training camp you would have a much larger turnout. This suggestion would allow you to have 2 comps, and a training camp, plus make it easer too have your 3 on 3. 3 on 3's are allot of fun, and a nice kind of escape if you will from the real 5 on 5 games. Anyways thoughs are just my thoughts, not that they mean a whole lot (he he that rhymes
). And heather your bro was right about this for sure, the best way to play with different players is get more people playing. So get it going in your school, use your beauty to suck in the guys, and then..... Where there are girls the boys will follow.

OK, I'll ask EWP if they can bring some equipment down that weekend.

I'm thinking, go with the 3on3, make it fun and light, and maybe try to focus on kids and beginners, as well as a few of us old experienced guys. Maybe have some novelty games or contests (any ideas?) (Maybe get an officer with a radar gun or something... that would be fun)(in the pool, not on the road where I usually meet them)
THEN
Have a bigger, more serious summer tournament later on.

Ok good idea Keegan i'd say that that is the best answer i've heard so far, contests and tournys would be fun mixed together. in fact Roger said they use to have a radar gun (or wut ever you call it) to measure speed and all, and you could have accuarcy contests, etc.

1) cops make me nervous
2)I wasn't saying we shouldn't play with new people, I was just thinking hather should suck it up
3)If the people want a 3 on 3 then you can count me in

Keegan, the time to start planing is now. So for the way your brain works maybe we should say that it should have ben planed by last week. :bgrinhat:

HeatherR

Hey, I was just stating a fact, it does get sort of old playing with the same people all of the time. As for getting new people out to play it is not so easy. My program at school consists mostly of panzy girls who think they may break a nail if they even so much as step in a gym or anywhere there is exercise involved. The ratio in my progrm is about 40/2, that's 40 girls to 2 men. And when I say men I mean old men who are creepy. This makes it rather hard for me to get anybody new out. Believe me I have tried many times.

As for the tournament idea I think it is great. But Tyler is right we (or you Keegan) need to start planning this last week so lets get our butts in gear!

hey heather, what program are you in. are they still accepting applications, just jokes. if you are trying to get a bunch of girls out you should just tell them about how hot all the guys are that paddle, that will pull them out.
