http://www.canoepolo.com/images/news/canchall.gifOn the 28th May 2004 at Hatfield Water Park near Doncaster, England a 24 hour canoe polo game will begin to raise much needed funds for three cancer charities.

The aim - to hold a continuous 24-hour canoe polo game and hopefully establish a Guinness World Record for the event. There will be two teams of five players with rolling substitutions so that the game does not stop and the opposition will be constantly changing. Players will volunteer for 30-minute sessions and will be subbed off after that time. Hopefully players will participate in several sessions over the 24 hours.

Yes we did it after 24 hours and 8 minutes for timeouts we did it.

The world record for Canoe Polo is set, well done to the 220 players that helped us get there, the ref's, timekeepers, adjudicator's and the team from York University that made it all happen.

A total goals of 501 were scored over the 24 hour's with the yellow ream winning.

Well done to everybody.

Well at last I can catch my breath. Cancer Challenge is completed.

24 hours and 8 minutes were played, with a 3 minute half time.

The yellow team sponsored by Circa Antiques of Pennsylvania, USA. won with 272 goals, to the red teams 229 who were sponsored by Desperate Measures.

There were no red cards but a few yellows, and it will all be happening again in two years time.

We managed to raise an astounding £14,627.53p for Cancer Research UK, Cancer Bacup and North Staffordshire Chemotherapy unit and have a fantastic weekend to boot.

A massive thank you to all the people who took part, organised, reffed, sold things, turned up and generally made the event an overwhelming success. Words don't do you justice.

I wish I could give you all the big love (you had to be there) I have, but unfortunatley it belongs to Ruth.

Today (wednesday) Ruth is undergoing yet another dose of chemotherapy and knowing how I feel, that can't be easy. So lets not forget the real reasons why we set a world record and played 24 hours of polo, lost sleep and hassled friends and family for sponsorship money.

Cancer is not a pleasant thing for anyone involved, and I personally have had more than my fair share of contact with it, so my challenge to all you out there who had a fabulous weekend is to come back in 2 years and do it again bigger, better, longer and with more sponsorship money and all your friends competing.

Lets show the world that canoe sport is not for the minority, with politics getting in the way, it is for everyone and anyone, it knows no boundaries and is a truely international and inspirational sport,
lets take this forward and make Cancer Challenge a sport changing contribution and not just another event. How? by not going the route of other paddle festivals, stuff the commercialism and hard core competition, Big love and fun is where it's at, remember this and we won't go far wrong.

Big Love is where its at and where it will stay.

Special thanks go to the team, Graeme and family, Desperate measures, Esther and Green Star, Hatfield waterpark and crew and last but not least Ruth, my inspiration and support throughout. You truely are one in a million.

Big Love to you all,

David Hepworth.

Oh my gosh. That is totally awsome. Congrats to all who were a part of this. Maybe in a few years we can make it an international event to raise the money where teams from all over the world play for that amount of time on the same day. Who is up for this? I am. And a bigger even would (hopefully) bring in more sponsorship money for the cause.

Just FYI, in TX we are planning 24 hours of rolling to go on hopefully in March or April at The Colony Aquatic Park in The Colony, Texas. If anyone wants to be a part of that, contact me. It will be dizzying fun!

Monica.
