Andy - I agree, those heavy balls are an injury inducing waste of time. Not as much as those 'swiss balls' in gymns - they are really ridiculous.
Not many people have a better shot than Andy, particularly given what a skinny weed he is. It's not technique though, it's just that he's left handed. If he was right handed he'd be rubbish.
Seriously - I bought one of these heavy balls, but I haven't found a good (or safe) way to use it - has anyone had any real success with them?
Cheers,
Paul Kerr

I have one of the Mikasa heavyweight balls. I don’t really use it for throwing because I agree that they are not very useful for that and it’s very easy to hurt yourself or someone else with one.
That said, I have found that they are useful for training the small muscles in my fingers and arm used to control the ball – both during play and at the end of a shot when you make last second adjustments to the ball’s direction.
I do two exercises primarily:
In the first, I take the ball and lightly pass the ball back and forth between my hands. I vary the distance between my hands and also the distance between my hands and my body. You can also vary whether you’re using primarily your fingers, wrists or arms/shoulders to control the ball.
The second thing I do is train my shoulders by holding the ball above my shoulder and move it around as if I’m looking to make a pass or shot.
I do both of these little drills for about 15 minutes while I’m watching TV or something – I just make sure there’s nothing breakable around!!!
