Howdy,
I competed in my first National Div 3 tournament last night and was shocked to say the least. The amount of boat climbing, scrapping, paddling off boats, turning people over when the ref. isn't looking and general un-sports-man-like behaviour was apalling.
It seems that there are a lot of people out there who cannot handle heir behaviour and insulting other members of their own or other teams seemed to be acceptable and common behaviour. I know for a fact that the team that I play for have principles that we live up to of telling each other where we went wrong and how to avoid i next time rather than just shoutin at each other and getting angry. We also know that skill plus some power far outweighs pure power/ignorance as we proved last night winning 3 games and drawing the other. Pretty impressive when we have 3 15 year olds on our team.
I am stuck with what to mention next, the illegal boat holding, the tipping people in by resting on their back deck and flipping them over with your hand or the fact that pusing onto the sides, t-boning, driving people into the side as hard as possible or double teaming any player with the ball, was all common place to name but a few points.
It was excellent to play at this level and hope to carry on up the ladder as I get older but I was appalled at some of the behaviour of players that were shouting at the referees, complaining about referee decisions and generally lowering the tone of the the tournament. I was wrongly accused by a referee of having put my paddle in someones face when it was them that had decided tpo use me as a slapping board for their paddles and fancied my chin, boat, head and body for propulsion but I knew that the correct thing to do is when the referee called me over was to say my yes sir no sir and three bags full sir then get back on with he game knowing that when I referee, if anyone argues with me they will start seeing cards exceptionally quickly and wouldn't expect anything less from other referees.
The list of incidences that went on through the night just to me, let alone the rest of my team or during the rest of the tournament is pretty lengthy and the only reason I haven't listed them ALL is that it would take far too long and the reason for this post is to highlight this problem that I have noticed.
Has anybody else noticed anything similar in any other leagues? I know for certain that the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Div 1 is of a higher standard of play without all the scrappiness that occured last night at National Div 3 North.
Philip.
