So, it sounds like your friend has no way to transport the boat from the airport to his accomodation. If he can transport it why not have him store it where he's staying? If not, perhaps he can ask his airline if they have a method to store luggage on a long layover.

Good luck,

Your friend might be able to check your boat straight through. If it is the same airline or even the same alliance (ie. Star=BMI, UAL, AirNZ etc) or partners, you should be fine. If not (ie. Quantas and Northwest) call and ask about an "interline transfer" - it still might be possible to check the boat straight through.

If the layover is <12 hours you should be OK, but it would be worth calling the airlines to attempt to arrange something if it is a bit longer. Especially if your friend has status with the airline, or is flying on a more expensive fare basis (esp. Full Fare Econ, Bus or 1st) it could help. I think you might be good even up to 24 hours since it is an International layover but I think that depends on the airline so you'll need to call.

And... if you don't get the answer you like the first time, call again later and talk to somebody else. When you get the answer you want make sure they enter the information into your record. Airlines have so many regulations and rules that often it is just a matter of talking to a person who either does know or does not know the rules depending on the situation.

One last thing - if the airline you fly on 1st doesn't charge to take boats, but the second one does - you might get the boat all the way for free if you check it in and do an interline transfer - no guarantees, but it is worth a try.

Good luck
