Hi
I have arranged on the 18th and 19th of October (weekend) for Belfast, a polo trainee ref's course and a polo level 1 coaching course. The venue is to be announced but it will be somewhere in Belfast. The price will be, £37.50 for both days (plus a pound or two depending on getting a room). This course is open to everybody, no matter what standard. We need 15-20 people for it to go ahead.
The Saturday will be the trainee ref's course. And Sunday will be the level 1 Coach course (polo coach). I will need to know numbers to arrange for the Tutor to come across from England. And also to arrange the number of Coaching manuals required. Also if anyone is interested the BCU sell a ref's pack for £7.50 which I can order as well. It includes a set of cards, whistle and the rule book.
So interested? What I need from you is,
Your name and e-mail address (or postal address)
Your club
Do you want ref's pack as well?
Send it to me at zuppypost@ntlworld.com and I will get back to you.

Coaching Course
Equally applicable to canoeists and non-canoeists, to players and those with no knowledge of the game, although termed an 'Introduction', the material provided is sufficient to support the coaching of teams to National League standard. The course does NOT involve paddling; therefore no access to water is needed.
Although there is a ‘standard’ syllabus, the course content is adjusted so as to best meet the needs of those attending. However, the basic outline is as follows:
Introduction
Background to/structure of canoe polo within the U.K.
Where to play canoe polo - water requirements etc……
Safety issues - supervision, what to wear, Leptopirosis…
Canoe Polo and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
Equipment - specifications, sources etc.
Child Protection and Equal Opportunities issues
The Role of the Coach
Rules
Understanding the fundamental rules of the game
Forward Paddling
Key coaching points and common problems
Ball Skills
Throwing technique
Catching technique
Warm Up
The 'what', 'why' and 'how' of warming up and down
Stretching technique
Defending
The purpose and roles of a defender
Key defending skills
Attacking
Principles of attacking as a team
Principles of attacking as an individual
Specific skills - fast break, working the zone etc
Goal Keeping
Purpose and roles of a goal keeper
Specific skills - hand position etc.
Other Skills
Dribbling
Shielding the ball
Blocking
What resources will participants receive?
Participants leave the course armed with a variety of resource materials to support their future coaching activities:
A comprehensive manual containing hand-outs, brochures and illustrative material relating to all topics within the syllabus.
A set of 16 laminated cards, containing all a Coach needs to plan a wide variety of training sessions which, collectively, will develop the full range of skills needed for paddlers to individually become competent and collectively develop as a successful team.
Can you gain a formally recognised qualification?
Those attending the course are eligible for Level One Competition Coach status. For this qualification to be granted you will need to:
Either be a British Canoe Union member or pay an £11-50 Registration Fee, (which covers your inclusion on the Coaching Register and provision, for a year, of insurance for your coaching activities - after 12 months you must become a B.C.U. member to retain your Coach status).
Provide evidence of holding a current first aid qualification, (minimum of a four hour course).
