Hi all,

Attached is a poster to advertise the European Canoe Polo Championships.

Can I please ask people in all countries to print off the poster,( in colour if possible) and hang it up in your local shops, places of work etc....

Your help would be much appreciated in an effort to inform as many people as possible about the event.

Thanks

Grainne

Why can't we do ourselves a favour and at least try and make the sport appealing for the public to watch, it is the European Championships after all!

We should be aiming to create something like the poster below that will catch peoples interest, not portray canoe polo as a Mickey Mouse sport :(

Hi Master G,

Thanks for your suggestion, a professional poster like that would be ideal.

Please forward a list of artists and printers, with estimates of costs and I will organise it from there.

As there is only 2 months to go before the competition I would encourage people to use the poster attached in my previous post in the meantime.

Keep the ideas coming in, email me at grainneokeeffe@hotmail.com

Thanks
Grainne

Oh come on, using that poster is a complete joke!
At the very least use a few more photos in a collage, and drop the lousy Times font. A little bit of work in photoshop/Paint Shop Pro/any graphics package would make it look at least a little bit more serious.
It is no wonder that the Special Olympics are getting all the limelight when this is the best we can come up with for publicising the event. And leaving it until 2 months before...
How long have we known that we were hosting the Europeans?

Mike,

I would be delighted if you could help out with this. I agree its a crap poster but as you know I am single handedly TRYING to publicise this event with very limited resources.

Regarding the late timing of this, I VOLUNTEERED to take this PR job on last April as I saw NOBODY else was doing it. I asked for suggestions and help at that stage - no replies.

I do not claim to be able to do this perfectly but would put it to you that if I did not do what I am trying to do then it would not get done at all!

Please let me know if you can help with this.

I am also trying to organise car stiackers.

Would anybody be willing to come up with a design please?

Grainne, I am not trying to diss what you are doing, I appreciate your work and effort and I am glad that someone is finally doing something about this.
But the very fact that you have to practically beg help off people is symptomatic of the problem. We have known that we were hosting the championships for a number of years now, and yet it is only now that the publicity is going out. The national committee should have been working on this since it was announced. Instead it appears that they have been doing very little. The special olympics have been blamed but they got their publicity out there early and often. That was what was needed. Then there might have been the possibility of getting proper sponsorship. It appears that there will be very little difference between the champs and the irish open because of money. No stand, no road closures, no marquee. Sorry this has turned into a bit of a rant, but it had to be said at some stage!

I am working on a basic poster design right now and will forward it to you as soon as I have finished it.

Thanks Mike,

Looking forward to that poster, maybe you'll do the car sticker too?

I knew taking on this job would means lots of critism, but thats ok, I'd like to hear more comments, it's the only way we can expect to improve in the future.

As I came into this job at such a late stage I have accepted that things on the PR side will be far from perfect, I'll just do as much as I can at this late stage.

It's good to see others are concearned about this too. :)

I hope that Mike is wrong and that there is some "master plan" somewhere for this euro champs. I personnally don't believe running something along the lines of the Irish open will be adaquate. We are left with the position of (no matter what the plan or lack of one is) getting on board and helping so as to limit the damage to the Irish image.

As for the poster. For something to download and print, it was good. It didn't have too much graphics like Master G's.

Never claimed poster was good, just functional!

I don't have time to make it good, unfortunatley.

Of all the people who play polo in Ireland, surely someone is good at art and design and could come up with a poster of some sort.

Well I think that seems to be one of the problems, is the co-ordanation of the talents we have between us. :-)

Any ideas or feedback?

Which font is that? :bgrinhat:
Stolen photos too but not bad.

Mike

One of them is Guinness :)
and the other is some gaelic font.
As for the photos, I know they are robbed, but I dont have any of my own from any internationals.

Excellent! I like it- lots! But think the font is a bit - well old fashioned! Kind of difficult to read it too. Maybe if heading was not all CAPITAL LETTERS it would help.

Is it a large file and will it be possible to send via email?
What softwear will people need to open it?

Mike

Old fashioned?
Hmmmm, I thought it was quaint and Irish.
As for the heading, I can change that I think...

Its an A4 sized jpeg, and at the moment its at 30Kb. I think I could make it smaller, but it would lose some quality

You have my mail address, send it when finished and I will mail it out. People will be blocking my mail soon :bfire:
I do like it but our euro logo is missing. :D

Thats true aswell, I asked the webmaster for the logo without the blue background so that I can use it, but no reply yet. You would swear that some people had to work or something :)

I will mail it on to ya when its done.

I'll join in with some thoughts...
I like the photo's :p
Fonts are ok.. maybe a bit more readable from a little more distance would be nice...
try to make a A4 print.. put it up on your wall, and see from what distance you can read it... if it's too difficult, people will walk on and not take time to have a better look...

As for the distribution..
Best would be to put in the photo's in highest resolution possible, and make it a PDF, in that way the fonts will always be sharp.. no matter which size paper thay are printed on, and you'll have a file in a reasonable size..
With PDF it will also look the smae on every pc.. (don't forget to embed the fonts)

I will print it on A3 and put it at our club.. so only A4 quality would be a shame...

keep up the good work :)

Martijn

Don't know if you can work with this, see attached.

Okay, I finally got them saved as PDF, and cleaned up a little bit. There are two versions, one with the gaelic writing, and one without.

You can download them from here (http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~doozer/euros_poster)

Enjoy, and I hope they work out okay for everyone.

The pictures looks great when they are printed.
Now they will be available in the north part of Sweden as a start!

Best regards,
Eva

I would like to say good work to both of you in getting a decent poster and car sticker design together. This should help publicise the event.

A great example of the hidden talents of our polo plyers. :)Thanks Mike.

Hope everybody will print off as many posters as possible and distribute in as many places as possible.

First poster terrible and as already discussed just gives impression of amateur.

Suggested poster very good and should be used.

As for comment about stolen photos - what else are they going to be used for - attitudes like this do stop sport growing.

Mike

They arent stolen photos, I asked Martijn if I could use them, and he had no problem with it. I think Niall was just pointing out that he had seen the photos somewhere else already.

Not just a pretty face eh (or should that be not even a pretty face)

Seriously, good stuff. It looks great.

Dear Unregistered,
The comment was intended as a joke to Mike. Since he has asked permission (more than I usually do :p ), I am even more impressed.

Still like the poster, lets see if we can plaster the place with them.

Just wondering has anybody (in Ireland) put up any of these posters. I've only seen one at wildwater.

GrainneOK
28-07-2003, 03:09 PM
I put up that one at Wild Water club house as well as emailing it to over 200 WWKC members.
Also sent some to
Outdoor Adventure Store and Great Outdoors in Dublin.
Put a few up here at work in Aer Rianta Dublin airport.
Emailed the details and poster to all paddlers & friends in my address book.

Hope there are lots more being put up around the country...???
Only 2 weeks to go............
