View Full Version : Let ICF and Japan know what you want on a WC website

Back in January I was invited by ICF (Jon Bisset) to contribute ideas on what we need for the website for Japan 2004 World Championhsips.
This was probably based on
a) my 20 years plus involvement in CanoePolo administration
b) 30 odd years in IT, inlcuding developing and running websites
c) My efforts in cobbling together reports etc for the 2002 World Championships, using the facilities of the CanoePolo.com forum, and various volunteers. This became necessary as the German WC site was less than we had hoped for, at one time running way behind on results, draw etc.
My interim submission to the ICF is attached.
One of the key recomendations (but just one) was
- · Online Scores, Reporting
Some people will not be able to receive Tv or Audio online. At least provide them with online scores. That is, as the score goes up on the scoreboard at the venue, it should also go up on the online scoreboard. (See www.cricinfo.com for example)
If the manpower can be found, this could be extended to online text reporting in English and the languages of the participating teams.
At last we have a forum for the 2004 World Championships. So now, what do you think we should expect from the World Championships website in 2004 ?
Hopefully we can get ICF and Japan Polo to "watch this space" and react to your reasoned expectations.
So, let's hear it.

Richard,
I find your proposal very interesting, and probably not so much items/request are missing as you target to have a high level communication system.
I understand from the contact and suggestions made so far that the implementation to build a website will be done by the ICF and/or the local guys.
I suggest to start with a core team of people, not to less, not to much, to get things on the move and to start to list the needs that will be necessery to have all suggestions implemented.
(eg, you, some people from japan, the ICF...)
There after start to analyse all the gaps, eg.:
- provider?
- which CMS (content management system)? ASP, PHP, typo3, phpnuke...
- who will do what?
- which technology will be available on the competitionsite?
- people involved to feed the site?
etc
And off course after this start to test and implement.
Finally, as we are 'only' 12 months away from the champs and let's say maybe only 6 months to have a site online, i think involvement of a team of administrators with different specialities to build the site should be a good solution.
Rather than leaving it to one admin that would have to care about everything.

I think the Q was what we would like to see on the website... not how it should be accomplished.. that's a totally different story.
In my view the next info would be ideal:
- Live scores... (website running on same Database as the schedule is processed in)
- At least for the finals, live scores during the game.
- Webcams giving live streams on all pitches.. (reasonable quality)
- Realtime statistics (top scorers ea)
- Good graphic representation of the playing system, always filled in up to date on the website..
Maybe also on paper with room to fill in the scores yourself (as we always have with Soccer worlds and europeans)
- Forum
- Chatroom
- All extra team/country info would be apreciated.
- Current website should already be available in English....
And probably some other things...
I think it would be nice to have computers at the jury table, with a connected score-screen, and connected to the network, so that the scores are inserted into a database, as soon as the jury processes it... if the website is getting it's information from the same database, you have the website upto date, without any work during the event....

I checked in regularly for game results from Germany and was always really excited when new results for the teams I was supporting were up.
Most of these have already been raised, but I would like to see from the Japan 2004 site:
- lists of entries
- team lists and photos (like Germany, perhaps include a link to the national body site if there is additional online info? - I think most national sites would showcase their national squads e.g. like Canada did, and it makes sense that these people most involved with their squads would have more motivation to ensure accurate and detailed information about their squads?) - going back to the concept raised by earlier posters of farming out some of the workload where appropriate.
- updated draws
pie in the sky wishlist:
live streaming of games, audio commentry (quality!), game stats (goal scorers is one that is easily available, but wouldn't it be just great to have others like "assists" "turnovers for" "turnovers against")
Player interviews coach interviews, spectator interviews.
Be able to purchase championship memorabilia online (videos of matches are highly sought after, perhaps these could be ordered and shipped??)
I don't really have anything new to suggest, there has been some great suggestions already, I really hope some of them will be implemented. :D
You´ve brought up some great ideas already, even though they are all good while running the competition. I´d also like to see some information before the competition starts, like:
-accomodation types and prices
-info on the airport
-if there are shuttle services
or any other information about the organisation.
I´ve heard that the site was already on, but it seems to be under construction again??
Thanks,
Nick
