For all those interested,
Air NZ has recently changed their policy regarding the additional charge for flying your kayak with you:
Oversize or unusual baggage items will be charged per item. Bikes, surfboards, kayaks, windsurfers and hang gliders will have a standard charge of $20 per item per one way journey and will be subject to availability on some aircraft.
It had previously been raised to $50 per item one way.
Be wary though...
Any excess baggage over 20 kg will be charged at $5 per additional kg. That means if you are carrying 25kg, there will be an additional charge of $25.00. This policy will be strictly enforced and is also subject to availability of space on some aircraft.
Also, when booking flights - don't forget to check plane size: We've been advised anything smaller than a 737 may have problems due to the odd size of the kayaks.
