CNBC is a failure with NTL Ireland subscribers, according to industry research figures seen by a BringBackEurosport reporter. The figures, compiled monthly by a trusted industry research organisation, show that six months after NTL put CNBC on their basic package its audiences are still so low that CNBC doesn't even merit a separate mention in the research and is lumped in with 'others'. This is despite the fact that CNBC is also available on Sky's satellite package. The combined NTL and Sky channel share for CNBC in Ireland is something below about 0.1%. If it was any higher it would be listed in the research figures.

The same research shows that Eurosport, before NTL dropped it, had approximately a 0.6% channel share from NTL Ireland subscribers, averaged over the 24 hours of a day, and 1.5% share during the morning periods. These NTL-only figures are not given directly in the research results but they are very easy to calculate by comparing the channel share for Eurosport in Ireland for the months before NTL dropped it with the channel share for Eurosport in Ireland for the months after NTL dropped it. The sudden drop in Eurosport's audience in Ireland on the date that NTL removed it from their service gives us a unique opportunity to measure the popularity of Eurosport among NTL subscribers. The size of the drop is a very good estimate of how much of Eurosport's channel share figure came from NTL Ireland subscribers.

Now that professional research has shown that CNBC is achieving just a fraction of the channel share ratings that Eurosport achieved from NTL Ireland subscribers before it was dropped in February, will NTL move to satisfy their customers' demands by bringing back Eurosport? In answer to queries from our reporter about NTL's response to this research Mark Mohan, Marketing Director of NTL Ireland refused to acknowledge the existance of the figures. "Over the next few months we will be conducting some analysis in relation to the popularity of all channels carried in our Basic TV pack and viewed by our customers" Mohan told us, in typical marketing-speak.

Mohan did not reply when asked whether or not he monitored the monthly research figures. If he does monitor the figures then he already knows that Eurosport was many times more popular than CNBC with NTL subscribers, but he is refusing admit it or to do anything about it. If he doesn't monitor the monthly research then you have to ask how NTL can claim to know anything about the popularity or otherwise of the channels they carry. Do they even care whether their channel mix satisfies their customers or not?

This research provides solid proof that NTL's customers prefer Eurosport over CNBC by a factor of at least 6 times, and makes nonsense of NTL's claim that they were responding to customer demands when they introduced CNBC.
