From looking around at the fast sprinters from different teams, people seem to use a variety of approaches to a sprint:

Some go for an all out strength approach - all pumpy arms, straight back, splashy and extremely high stroke rate.

A the other end of the spectrum, others use very good and efficient technique - lots of trunk rotation, good body posture, long strokes with a good catch.

Obviously for paddling over a longer distance, there is no substitute for good technique, but for a 15m sprint, does it pay to sacrifice efficient technique in favour of a brute strength approach?

What do folks think, and does anyone have any specific training exercises that they use for training for the sprint?

In Hong Kong I was taught to paddle shorter strokes since longer strokes apparently create drag, so I've always wondered about the proper technique.

I practise sprints by doing full length shuttles, usually with another person so I have a speed reference. Then I vary my technique and see what works best.

I've personally found that switching from an all out power frenzy to a more controlled technique helped. Also I found that relying on sheer power put quite a lot of strain on my forearms and elbows, which wasn't too good.
