20th Franco Baschirotto Memorial Challenge Trophy 2009

For the 20th Franco Baschirotto Memorial Challenge Trophy which will be held at San Giorgio di Nogaro on the 11th and 12th of July in 2009, we shall be organising a ‘special event’ tournament where we would like to commemorate and celebrate 30 years of canoe polo activity in Italy (1979-2009).

For this occasion we would like to invite to the Tournament all those clubs or national teams who had previously won the Trophy and are still active today in the sport. These teams are:

· Kanu Club Limmer, Germany 1985
· K.G. Wanderfalke, Germany 1986
· L.K.V. Rijnland, The Netherlands 1987
· Australian Senior National Team 1989
· Canoa San Giorgio, Italy 1992
· A.S. Mariner Club, Italy 2004
· Zurich Kanu Polo, Switzerland 2005
· Deventer K.V., The Netherlands 2006
· Italian U21 National Team, 2007
· The Trophy winners in 2008

As we would also like teams from other European countries to join in these celebrations with us, we would like to invite the current year’s club national champions (2008) from the following countries:

· U.K.
· FRANCE
· ITALY
· GERMANY
· THE NETHERLANDS
· SPAIN


Invitations will be sent to all the 16 listed clubs and national teams after the conclusion of all the European Championships in 2008. The expiry date of registration must be confirmed within the 1st of December 2009. After the expiry date if there are vacancies due to any teams declining to register, then the tournament will be considered ‘Open’, and other club/national team can take their place.
The maximum number of registered teams is limited to 16.

Good news!

I have just heard through the Italian grapevine that Canoa Club Napoli, winners of the tournament in 1988 have regrouped and will play in next year's Italian Serie B Championships.

This means that they too will get an invitation to join in the celebrations and play in next year's event.

During the 'Special Edition' tournament which will be held next year, we would like to organise an historic one-off game of canoe polo played with the original 'Italian paddle only' rules (complete with the large floating goals) used in Italy from 1979 until 1992, to highlight the anniversary of these first 30 years of canoe polo in Italy.

Although it will be very easy to find two Italian teams eager to play this match, I would like to find a non-Italian top level European team which used to play with these rules (and would also take part in the main event as well) to play against the Italian selection.

If no European club knowledgable of these rules is available, then we will be looking out for 8 volunteers to play together a competitive match against a full Italian team.
