Alright lads don't know if ye heard of the plans to build a nice big power station on the Roughty

but have a look at this site

www.savetheroughty.com

even if you can't make it down (like me - finals :( ) at least post off the letters. This is one of the best rivers in the country and it'd be stupid if we didn't try to stop them.

If we all do our bit we could make a difference :ninja:
(Jesus I sound like a hippy)

Hydro power is better for our enviroment !!

So :thumbdown to your enviroment recking plan !!

Great river

can be big and scary at its best. It would be a shame to start daming rivers like this for minimal gain (lets face it its not exactly a three gorges project, we're not talking gigawatts of power). Not only a good river to paddle but one of the ones which when you're on it you feel your in gods own country. Stunning scenery

Best of Luck in raising the issue

Patrick

yeah so there Delaney

As Pat said it's a class river and if you bothered to look at the site you'd have seen that the same power could be made by 2 windmills and they can knock down all the trees they want to make them for all I care.

For those who can see the photo there are at least 6 polo players who took part in the protest (all from WWKC)

According to the paper there was at least 100paddlers who showed up with help form local farmers. Good to see both working together.

Good result for the organisers.

Canoeists protest over planned hydro-electric scheme in Kerry
By Anne Lucey

Around 100 canoeists from all over Ireland gathered on a Co Kerry river yesterday to protest against a proposed hydro-electric scheme.

The protesters at the Roughty River near Kilgarvan were joined by some local farmers.

The canoeists have said they are running out of unspoilt whitewater rivers - rivers with variable and challenging levels suitable for canoeing - as a result of the proliferation of small hydro-electric schemes on Irish rivers.

The 19-mile Roughty runs into Kenmare Bay and is one of a few rivers to receive three stars in the Irish Whitewater Guidebook. The section of the river earmarked for the hydro-electric scheme has a huge variety of waterfalls and rapids and is "an ideal river to train on" according to Mr Eoin Browne, one of the organisers of the "Save the Roughty" campaign.

"We are completely for green energy. It would be nice however, if as well as unspoilt air we could have unspoilt rivers," Mr Morgan O'Sullivan, co-ordinator of the protest, said.

He was pleased by the turnout yesterday: "It goes some way towards showing the concern paddlers have about rivers and the growth in hydro-electric schemes."

Plans for a hydro-electric scheme on the Roughty river are currently with An Bord Pleanála, following on oral hearing in Tralee in October. A decision is expected next month.

Don't forget the CIT and the Grove club in Belfast (me). Anyone got any interesting stories from the paddle down? I collected 2 basketball tops and a pair of short which turned out to be the match gear of the local Div 1 basketball team. And no I didn't give it back, after all I had to clean up the river after them.
So did anyone see some drowned tall people???? :lepr:
