Last I heard they were trying to settle the date (ie change it so it didn't clash with riverfest) not sure if this is possible at this stage but they probably aren't taking entries until it's finalised.

Noone has contacted the National Committee about any changes. I thought that the idea was to have it on the same weekend so that we could as many people down to Limerick at the same weekend as Riverfest.

Just to stop the rumors, just a quick message.

The Limerick Polo competition, will be run as part of Riverfest this year, (Riverfest is the biggest festivel in Limerick).

The competition is going to be outdoor, in town.

I will post up entry details and information about the competition and the format that it will take, and the festivel in general later this weekend.

If anyone wants to contact me you can send me an e-mail on
aiholmes@deloitte.ie

All the details will be up by the end of the weekend.

Right so, sorry for the delay, but was trying to iron out the details.

The competition is going to be outdoors, beside the Island. This has the apperance of making a great location for a polo pitch.

Entry to this competition is slightly different to others that have gone on before as each individual team member must pay an entry fee, which allows them to take part in any of the Kayaking events being run at riverfest.

The entry fee is €25 per person, €15 for juniors.

I know that this seems high, but I will explain, apon registration, you will get your pack (includeds T-Shirt and other odds and ends). The €25 also includeds entry to the nightclub on the Saturday night and possibly a bbq, still working on the details on this one. I will post up more about this as I get the information, I am fairly sure that I have forgotten something.

The competition itself will be run as any ordinary competition. Prizes are sponsered by the Riverfest, so they are going to be good.

If anybody has any queries about this competition or about Riverfest in general, then please send me a mail to aiholmes@deloitte.ie

Information abour Riverfest and the other kayaking events can be found at http://www.limerickriverfest.blogspot.com/

I have attached the entry forms, please complete the forms and return to me ASAP. If you intend to enter a team then please let me know ASAP.

Thanks

Homer

Just had a look at the Riverfest website and according to it the canoe polo qualifiers are at 5pm saturday and the finals are at 5pm sunday - which makes sense given the release that will be needed for the racing at curragower but surely we will run out of light - and when are we suposed to go drinking?:D

Homer

Yes there is space for more teams,

If you have any queries then you can ring me on 085-7192439.

The time for needed for the polo will depend on the number of teams that enter which will in turn dictate the amount of time that will be needed.

The original plan that was in place is that the polo will go on after the events on curragower and it they may bring in lights. The party will be in the boat club beside the polo pitch.

I'm crap at posting this stuff up, so any questions your probably better off to ring me.

Are there any results for the competition?

Also is it true that the venue was sub standard? (floating nappies and dead eels as well as certain members of the public relieving themselves into the playing area?)

Surely this should not be allowed to happen?
I have to admit that I wasnt there, but these are some of the things that I heard about from the weekend.

It is indeed true that there were nappies and public relieving. It is also the first time that I've been spat at by spectators at a competition.

It might have been an unfortunate decision to hold Saturday's games in the evening surrounded by drunk folk but I think once the pool wasn't being used the organisers didn't have a lot of choice, venue wise.

Given the nappies, the tidal nature of the pitch and the drunken locals pissing into the pitch area I think I'd second Aido's thanks to Homer, Sean et al for a fun weekend against the odds.

On another note, is there any sign of the promised prizes?

After a lot of noise here about not rescheduling last year's competition schedule to take advantage of the sponsorship from the River Fest, it's a touch ironic that the prizes are "in the post". There seemed to be plenty of cash for anyone who jumped on the wave and for racing plastic boats a few hundred metres and ringing a bell.

I'm really hoping the prizes show up this time because if not, it'll be the 4th time in a row that Kamikaze members have gone to Limerick, won competitions and not got our prizes. Bad luck in the extreme.

Anywho, the burgers were top notch and thanks again lads for the organisation, it was fun. My address is available on request and I can get those cheques to the other WWKC teams that won prizes if you need a hand contacting them.

Cheers
Alastair

Mike
This year the competition was tried at an outdoor venue that give us high visibility to speectators near the Riverfest site.

Good points about venue:
i) people were able to see the site
ii) the pitch size was a good size.
iii) the organisers worked decisively to work out any issues.
iv) the pitch was tidal so water was comtinually being refreshed

Bad points
i) undesirables were urinating into the water on Friday night
ii) a nappy was seen floating in on the tide
iii) broken glass was near the get on area.
iv) we were treated as second class citizens during the Riverfest.
v) no prizes (as were promised by the riverfest committee) were available at the prizegiving leaving the winners looking like non-entities.

The organisers have stated that they will probably move back to the pool next year.

It is such a pity for polo in this country that our paddlers do not enjoy the same respect/encouragement as other disciplins

hopefully it was a legitamit error on some ones part and that polo prizes will arrive ....

also well done to all competitors for playing in those conditions....

Nikolay, the pressure is on for next weekend :D

I have to say i think it was a great spot to play polo and it was nice to see a viable alternative to the pool. In relation to th bad stuff that happened these things are easily remedied.
1. Sweep the sides of the area at the beginning of the weekend = no glass on the edges.
2. Ask for help - people are always willing to give a hand on the day etc. I volunteered but was never asked to help - i could have been down sweeping glass
3. Schedule the games for the afternoon instead of nighttime - therefore avoiding drunken abusers etc! also allowing people decent time to eat and get to the party.

As for the people relieving themselves on the pitches - in fairness every year at carrick on the saturday night countless male members of actual polo teams relieve themselves on the pitches and it has never been raised as an issue and its not a tidal venue with water flushing through - perhaps the issue is that it was strangers pissing on the pitches and not people you know!

Anyway thanks to homer and sean for trying something new! a little bit chaotic i think but definitely worth a try and could be better next year!

Cheers

Thanks Fiona,

I wasnt aware of that, being the finely tuned athlete that I am, I am usually tucked up in bed early on saturday nights of competitions, (or passed out somewhere with empty wine bottle in hand.)

Now I think i'll give carrick a miss  :(
cheers yourself
