World Masters Games Sydney 2009 01 Jul 2008 02:07 #1

World Masters Games 2009 – Penrith, Sydney, Australia 10-12th October 2009

In December 2007 the organising committee of the 2009 World Masters Games announced that Canoe Polo has been added as a discipline of the Canoe Kayak Programme at the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games.

This decision was made after extensive lobbying from Australian Canoeing, Helen Brownlee _ ICF Board of Directors and President OCA - Oceania Canoe Association, Duncan Cochrane of the ICF Canoe Polo Committee and members of the world wide canoe polo community. The World Masters Games is the biggest mass participation, multi-national, multi-sport festival in the world with over 30,000 athletes involved in 28 sports.
Canoe Polo will be held on two specially built Canoe Polo Fields adjacent to the Penrith White-water Stadium (the Sydney Olympic Slalom Course) in Sydney’s western suburbs.
This World Masters Games is not aimed at National Teams- it is more about participation and the social experience. The games is open to ANY Canoe Polo team of any level of skill or experience from around the world. There will be both social (which may be mixed teams) and competitive classes for ages 30 + and 45+ and also a separate female class,
Canoe Polo Team Leaders can now enter their teams and team details into their choice of categories at www.2009worldmasters.com. Individual entries are also accepted.
As an extra incentive to overseas participants, the 2009 Oceania Canoe Polo Championships will be held at the same venue the weekend before the WMG (October 3-5) and all visiting teams will be welcome to enter for a minimal fee. Categories will include U18 Men and Women, U21 Men and Women, Senior Men, Senior Women, Over 35 and possibly Over 45 if there is sufficient interest. For any details of the WMG or 2009 Oceania Championships please contact Duncan Cochrane duncan@kayaksplus.com.au

Hi All,

To date 11 teams have been entered in the WMG in Sydney next year but so far none from North America or Europe. We really need more teams to make this event a success and ensure polo's participation in not only this games but all future games.

I know there are many, many players who have said they are coming but as yet not entered- please can people enter their teams asap as it will ensure the events success and also have a big impact on the budget of the event.

For those from overseas there will be plenty of boats of various designs available for a small fee so you only need to bring your other gear. (There will be some other hire equipment available but I cannot comment on the quality of it at this stage.)

If you would like further details please email me at duncan@kayaksplus.com.au

In short: interesting weather for 10 days and some adjustment of gameplay due to different interpretations of the rules and some tough calls against our spanish friends in too many games.

But, a great many good and competitive players, nice quality rental boats from Duncan and some top-hosting by the aussies, a nice venue.. and a shiny medal thanks to the supprisingly efficient attacking skills of my Kiwi teammates.

And thanks to Duncan, Martin van Arkens and Ginny for playing with the rest of us ordinarry oldies

Cheers, Asger.

Big thanks to Duncan and organizing team. Thanks also to all the international teams for making the long trip over.

It was also fun getting behind the Spanish team and giving them a good cheer. Likewise thanks to the Espana team for cheering on the Shoalmasters.

Great comp with a fun vibe.
